A Note on Purity

“Nature does nothing uselessly; everything has a purpose.” -Aristotle

Essential oils are a valuable and powerful resource for supporting your natural health and lifestyle. Sourced directly from nature, they can be used in a wide array of applications. They can work on the physical level to support the body in relieving pain, reducing inflammation,  healing from disease and chronic illness, re-balancing hormones, and boosting the immune system. They can work on the emotional and mental levels to boost mood, ground the nervous system, and support lifestyle changes and deep emotional healing work. Essential oils are deeply nourishing for the body and soul!

They can also be used in myriad ways in our external life to provide nontoxic and sustainable resources such as cleaning products, pest repellants, organic gardening, personal care/beauty products, travel support, and a wide array of other benefits. Essential oils are easily integrated into everyday life to provide a safe and natural means of reconnecting to our health and wholeness.

What are essential oils and why are they so great?
Essential oils are natural compounds that come from the seeds, roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, and other parts of the plant.  In nature, they are part of the plant’s natural defense and immune systems. These same properties translate similarly to the human body, serving a variety of protective and regenerative purposes. The oils support balance among the body’s various systems and at many levels of impact from the cellular level to the whole organism. For any Chemistry nerds like myself, the oils are composed of volatile organic compounds which are purified through a variety of extraction processes (e.g. distillation, cold pressing).

The complexity and bio-selectivity of the oils are two of their most potent aspects and why they have such powerful capacity to support our health. Their selective nature allows them to support anything that is beneficial in the body (e.g. good flora, healthy cells, healing/healthy immune system response) and eliminate anything that is a threat (e.g. bacteria, viruses, free radicals, inflammation response). Their complexity of structure allows a single oil to work in a number of diverse applications and prevents the body from developing a tolerance to the oils. Unlike long-term prescription medication use, the oils will never reduce their potency in the body — your body will never develop a tolerance. They are rock stars with antiseptic, antibacterial, antifungal, analgesic, antidepressant, and anti-inflammatory properties.

How do I use essential oils?
Essential oils can be used in three main ways: aromatically, topically*, and internally**. Each application method has its own unique strengths.
Aromatic Application
To use aromatically, you can use a diffuser. In a pinch/on-the-go, you can inhale straight from the bottle or put a drop of oil in the palm of your hand, rub your hands together, cup the palms together in front of your nose, and inhale deeply.

One of my favorite experiences: If that mid-afternoon slump hits, I like to put a drop of wild orange oil or citrus bliss oil and a drop of peppermint oil on my palms and get a good dose of pick-me-up. It is magical and legitimately works!

Note: Do not put essential oils in a humidifier unless it is designed for use with oils.  The oils are strong and can dissolve certain plastics and materials.

Topical Application
Most essential oils can be applied directly on the skin*. (All dōTERRA oils are safe for topical application.) Although not required, I recommend using with non-toxic, unscented lotion or a carrier oil (e.g. coconut oil, almond oil, avocado oil) for ease of application. I suggest applying the oils directly over/near the area of need for acute issues and on the abdomen or bottoms of the feet for system-wide impact. It is important to remember that 70% of what we put on our skin goes straight into our bloodstream,

so the purity and quality of the oils for topical application is key.  See ‘A Note on Purity’ below for more details.

One of my favorite experiences: I keep a travel pack of oils on-hand with me all the time. I like to use lemon oil, lavender oil, or melaleuca (tea tree) oil as a natural hand sanitizer if I am out and about. Particularly if I am sitting down to eat at a restaurant, applying the oil is a quick maneuver but it usually provides a nice mood boost in addition to keeping things clean. Unlike conventional hand sanitizer and antibacterials, it won’t have any negative side effects like destroying the good bacteria in my digestive system or creating super-bugs.

*Note: You should ALWAYS dilute oils for use with babies, children, and pets.  Oils are extremely potent and concentrated, a little goes a long way.  It’s also important to note that not all oils that are safe for humans are safe for pets.

Internal Application
Not all oils are safe to consume internally, but those that are have powerful impact. To take internally, you can put a drop in a glass of water or fill a capsule with your desired blend. Be sure to only use glass or stainless steel containers if mixing oils with water.  Other materials may be reactive with the oils, especially plastics.  You may want to note that oils get stronger the longer they sit in the water.

One of my favorite experiences: Peppermint oil and wild orange oil are potent for relieving/eliminating heartburn and digestive discomfort.  If I’m not feeling great after a meal, I will add 1-2 drops of one or both oils to a glass of water and drink the mixture. You can also apply the oils directly on the skin over the area of discomfort (e.g. the chest for heartburn and the abdomen for digestive upset).  Both are surprisingly and wonderfully effective.

**Note: All dōTERRA oils that are safe for internal application are marked with a nutritional information label like you find on food in the grocery store.  They are also labeled with an ‘I’ in a green dot on the website and product catalogs. They also offer many popular options already in capsule form. Do not consume any oil internally unless you are sure it is safe for consumption.

Where can I get essential oils and which ones should I buy?
As essential oils become increasingly popular because of their power and versatility, their availability is becoming more widespread.  So much so, you can even get them at the corner drug store.  But, not all oils are created equally — and I really wouldn’t recommend the drug store option.  There is no universal purity or standard agency regulation for oils. So, it’s critical — especially if you are applying topically or consuming internally — to source your oils well.  I was *shocked* to learn that an oil that is labeled ‘100% pure’ can be cut by up to 90% with other solvents and ingredients — ninety percent! And the other ingredients won’t necessarily be labeled because it does not get regulated by the FDA.

It is simply a ‘must do’ to connect with a reputable company with third-party testing and good business practices.  Unlike many other people who rep for a particular oil company, I will not tell you that my company is the only good one.  Frankly, that doesn’t feel like authenticity and integrity to me. I have not researched all oil companies out there, but I do feel confident in recommending dōTERRA, Young Living, and Veriditas.

If cost and budgeting is a concern, I will offer that with truly pure oils, a little goes a long way. One drop can actually serve every cell in the human body. One drop of peppermint oil is equivalent to 28 cups of peppermint tea. We tend to think that if some is good, more is better; but that’s not necessarily the case with oils.  You may also choose to buy a ‘lesser’ oil from the health food store or online for cleaning products and household uses, but I would not use these with the body. Generally speaking a decent brand that’s not certified pure has some additional solvents in the mix.  This is okay for cleaning but not for the human body. You can actually tell a noticeable difference in a side-by-side comparison.

I made a conscious choice to align myself with dōTERRA because their products are stellar in both quality and options, and their sourcing and business practices are reputable and verified. I was a pretty die-hard skeptic (with a background in advanced Environmental Chemistry studies, no less) venturing out into the world of essential oils.  I was transformed into a gently enthusiastic evangelist by my own experience with the oils themselves. They straight up work, and they work better than most/any conventional options.  And I was really called toward the specific product line that dōTERRA offers.  I really love their blends and specialty products more than any other company I’ve found.

Why dōTERRA?
dōTERRA (meaning gift of the earth) crafts certified pure therapeutic grade (CPTG) essential oils through thoughtful and supportive business practices — for their wellness advocate representatives as well as their farmers and distillers.

They source and develop their farms in areas that are indigenous and optimal for each particular plant species to thrive, ensuring ideal chemistry for the plant and the most potent product possible. For example, their lemon and bergamot are sourced from Sicily, and their oregano is sourced from Turkey. Their products are third-party tested to ensure quality standards, and they openly publish reports on every batch of oils. Their oils contain absolutely no herbicides, pesticides, weeds, fillers or obscene carrier oils.

They created a model of co-impact sourcing that supports the development of sustainable long-term, mutually beneficial supplier partnerships while creating sustainable jobs and providing reliable income in underdeveloped areas.

They believe in giving back and creating a better world, together. Through their Healing Hands Foundation, they invest in projects all around the globe with the mission to bring healing and hope to the world by empowering impoverished communities and investing in efforts to free these areas of disease and poverty. What’s more, dōTERRA is so committed to this demonstration of care that they cover all administrative costs of the foundation, so all the donations go directly to those receiving aid.

A Note on Purity
dōTERRA oils are certified pure therapeutic grade (CPTG) and verified by rigorous third party testing. That means there are no fillers, solvents, carrier oils, residuals, herbicides, pesticides, or peripherals – they are just pure goodness in a bottle. You can check it out if you’re curious. dōTERRA publishes open reports on every batch of oil.

Why is this so critical?
We want and need to know what are in the products we are choosing — especially the ones we are putting on our skin or ingesting. Up to 70% of what we put on our skin goes straight into our bloodstream. So if you wouldn’t eat it, you probably shouldn’t apply it. There is no universal or governmental standards agency for essential oils. Even an oil marked ‘100% pure’ can be cut by up to 90% with other ingredients and solvents; and those other additives won’t necessarily be on the label because the products are not regulated by the FDA.

If you’re skeptical, I invite you to experience it for yourself.  You can tell a significant difference in a side-by-side comparison just by smelling.  As a frequenter of many health food stores over the years and the daughter of a mother who freakin’ loved potpourri, I have smelled a lot of lavenders in my life.  I really didn’t care for any of them.  Like, at all.  And then I smelled dōTERRA’s lavender oil in my first introductory class and I was completely transformed and hooked. That was the moment I knew there was something different and vital about these products.  It’s the most clean and clear and incredible lavender you’ve ever experienced.  I have yet to come across anyone with an aversion or sensitivity to these oils — even those who are triggered by many perfumes and common household products.

Because these oils are truly pure, a little goes a very long way. One drop has the capacity to serve every cell in the human body.  One drop of peppermint oil is equivalent to 28 cups of peppermint tea. We tend to think that if some is good, more is better; but that’s not necessarily true with essential oils. They have powerhouse potency in literally every drop.
